21 Jul AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROFESSION OF CURATING CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBITIONS
The word ‘curate’ is by now often used casually for many activities. One can easily assume it means selecting or designing a situation, program or experience– for instance it can refer to creating a playlist, a wellness program or even a travel experience. Historically, however, the term ‘curator’ originated in the art industry and is deemed a professional role requiring a Master’s degree or PhD in Art History, Curatorial Studies or Museum Studies. Within the industry, there are many different kinds of curators with differing expertise, ranging from museum curators who work with historical collections to independent curators who work with living artists and contemporary societal issues. This seminar will focus specifically on the role and profession of the contemporary art curator, who works independently and globally, with living artists. Through case studies with a professional curator, the seminar will cover how a curator researches, conceives, and builds an exhibition and its narrative with the artists. It will also cover the variety of venues curators interact with — be it museums, galleries, public spaces, small towns, to biennials and festivals. Within these case studies, students will learn about the skills and relationship dynamics managed throughout the process, touching upon international relations, public speaking, client services for corporate sponsors, diplomacy with government bodies, fundraising, communications and publishing to name just a few areas the curator must navigate. Students will present publicly in class about a chosen exhibition. A mandatory visit to a Madrid museum will be included in the seminar.
