HIGH-PERFORMANCE ATTENTION FOR A MORE MEANINGFUL USE OF YOUR TIME

This workshop provides students with knowledge and skills to boost their attention in an age of digital distraction, for better performance during and after their time at IE.

We all love digital technology. At university, laptops, tablets and smartphones have become an integral part of our daily work, and our private lives. Despite the huge advantages of these tools, there may be a darker side to them. As more and more apps and tech-based tools try to grab our limited attention, many of us are struggling to focus on what is really important. Our human attention is a limited resource and we have to decide wisely which aspects of our environment to focus on – and what to ignore – in order to be productive. This workshop will introduce findings from decades of research on attention to help students boost their attentional resources, inside and outside the lecture room. Students will learn how attention works, how it can be trained to perform better professionally, and how to deal effectively with digital (and non-digital) distractions.

We will begin the journey with 2 sessions of self-development and self-awareness to embark on the Mind Pillar offered by the Centre for Health, Wellbeing and Happiness. We are living in a world with multiple distractions, each competing for our attention and each in their own unique way drawing on our mental energy.

Focusing your attention and reflective capacities on understanding the impact of emotions on your behaviors and mindscapes, as well as, enhancing your awareness of how your mind works and processes information will enable you to build a solid foundation on which you can further explore the role of technology as a strong attention deviator.
