20 Feb LATIN AMERICA IN A NUTSHELL
Latin America comprises more than twenty million square kilometers with an estimated population of 667 million inhabitants. Due to its extension, Latin America presents a great complexity that repeatedly falls into oversimplification, cliches and misconceptions. This seminar aims to offer a comprehensive analysis of the region in order to provide students with a better understanding of its economic, institutional, social and cultural background and its current situation in the 21st century. To deepen the knowledge about the different dynamics of cooperation and conflict, of its successes and failures, will allow myths to be dismantled and its potential to be explored, becoming a revealing opportunity for students of different disciplines and interests. This seminar will not only provide the students with a unique insight on the Latin American context and its possibilities, but it will also train them in information gathering and analysis, and will furnish future graduates with a basic framework for the preparation of similar reports and presentations.

1. develop a general vision of Latin America as an international sub-system, its distribution of resources, the character of the constituent units, the main patterns of interaction and the most relevant institutions
2. identify and use the theoretical concepts used to analyze the political, economic and social aspects of the region.
3. scrutinize the strategies of the main actors, their interests, and the potential conflicts that may occur between them.
4. recognize and relate emerging social and political trends
5. generate prospective analyzes on the situation in Latin America, the role of the US in the region, and the policies of China and Europe in a changing world.
