04 Nov LEARNING FROM FAILURES: LESSONS FROM BROKEN TOYS IN SPORTS
We are used to learn from very successful examples in life. Case studies used in class are also based on success stories. However, in this Advanced Seminar, we will learn from popular failure cases. These stories hide an important learning outcome: success comes with context and personal incentives’ alignment.
In this Seminar we will analyze the cases of some sports athletes that destroyed their careers. Understanding the reasons that move these athletes to take the “wrong” career path and when they did it becomes essential to understand success and the path to it. We will also work together in understanding the role of societal norms, politics, inclusive institutions, access to education and health or financial literacy, determine the lives of extremely competitive individuals. Throughout the seminar, students will not only learn about these characters from the theoretical point of view, but they will also apply and adapt the theory by talking and interacting with professionals dealing with sports success.
A participatory learning approach will be fostered, and debates will take place in class to develop and assess analytical and critical thinking of students toward this area.
