Photography for Social Change is an advanced seminar that explores the power of visual storytelling as a catalyst for social impact. The course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge to use photography as a tool for advocacy and change. Students will learn about documentary photography, ethical representation, and the creation of impactful advocacy campaigns. This course fosters a deep understanding of how visual media can drive societal transformation and encourages students to become active participants in social change.

CHARLES KUSHNER
Charles Kushner has a master’s in corporate and marketing communications from IE University (2020) and a bachelor’s in photography from Columbia College Chicago (2004). He has over 20 years experience working in creative and education sectors in the United States, Asia and Europe. He is a visual story teller with a passion for helping others tell theirs.
Skills
1. Students will develop the ability to critically analyze and evaluate documentary photographs, assessing their impact on public perception and policy.
2. Students will be able to articulate the role of photography in social movements and the ethical considerations involved in representing marginalized communities.
3. By the end of the course, students will be able to create a photographic project that effectively highlights a social issue, demonstrating an understanding of ethical representation and storytelling techniques.
